Parliament and Government Introduce Energy-Saving Measures Amid Power System Challenges

The Parliament and Government of the Republic of Moldova have introduced several measures to reduce electricity consumption amid ongoing alerts and challenges in the energy and hydrological systems. Officials have reduced lighting use and adjusted water consumption.

Parliament employees have been encouraged to avoid using elevators for short distances and use stairs instead. Unnecessary electrical equipment has been disconnected, while the operation of other devices has been limited strictly to essential work-related needs, according to representatives of the institution.

The decorative and architectural lighting of the Parliament building has been temporarily switched off, as well as the hot water supply. The institution’s press service told Realitatea that some of the measures are part of its regular resource-saving practices.

“Unnecessary energy consumption before the start of the working day, during breaks and after the end of the working schedule is being avoided. (…) Currently, around 70% of the Parliament Secretariat’s employees are on annual leave, which allows energy consumption to be optimized through the use of fewer spaces and equipment. At the same time, motion sensors on stairs and in certain rooms, previously installed as part of energy efficiency measures, contribute to reducing electricity consumption by ensuring that lighting operates only when necessary,” the Parliament said.

The Government has also implemented similar measures. Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici told Realitatea that some elevators in the Government building have been switched off and corridor lighting has been reduced.

The period for watering the lawn in front of the Government building has been shortened, outdoor decorative lighting has been turned off, and the fountain has been stopped.

Representatives of the Presidency have not yet responded to Realitatea’s requests to provide details on the institution’s electricity-saving measures.
