The Republic of Moldova has reached an agreement with Ukraine on transporting Ukrainian goods through Moldova’s railway network, Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici announced.
The agreement was negotiated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) with its Ukrainian counterparts under the supervision of the two countries’ prime ministers. The announcement follows a statement by Ukrainian Prime Minister Serghei Korețchi on social media.
Ukraine plans to export and transport up to 6 million tons of cargo during the 2026 agricultural year via various regional routes. Moldova aims to attract approximately 10% of this volume and will therefore offer a 50% discount on transit through Moldovan territory.
Ciorici said such discounts are a common practice when countries seek to attract large transit volumes. Despite the reduced tariff, the additional cargo is expected to generate revenue and profit for the Moldovan Railway (CFM).
The potential opportunity for CFM is estimated at several million euros, according to the government spokesperson.
The authorities also plan to increase CFM’s capacity to ensure that the railway operator can handle a larger volume of Ukrainian transit cargo efficiently.
The new regime will apply from August 10 until the end of 2026.
Kyiv–Chișinău train route to be changed
Starting August 17, the route of the Kyiv–Chișinău train will also be modified under the agreement between Moldova and Ukraine.
The change is intended to make it more convenient for Ukrainian citizens traveling to Chișinău International Airport.
