Moldova is sending a protest note to the Kremlin after Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski announced plans to open 17 polling stations in the region for Russia’s State Duma elections, Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi said.
The Moldovan foreign minister said the authorities in Chisinau had authorized only one polling station on Moldovan territory — at the Russian Embassy. He added that Moldova would formally communicate its position on the plans announced by Moscow and Tiraspol through diplomatic channels.
“We are in the process of sending a protest note to the Russian mission in Chisinau. (…) Only the polling station located on the territory of the Russian Federation’s embassy has been authorized. Any other polling station opened without the consent of the authorities would be an unfriendly act,” Popsoi said.
On August 28, Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski said that 17 polling stations would be opened in the Transnistrian region for Russia’s State Duma elections. According to him, the region’s de facto authorities would prepare the necessary premises.
At the time, Moldova’s Reintegration Bureau and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that such plans were contrary to international law.
