Head of Moldova’s Electronic Governance Agency Steps Down After Data Breach Affecting 750,000 Citizens

Nicoleta Colomeet, head of Moldova’s Electronic Governance Agency, is leaving her position after data belonging to 750,000 Moldovans was accessed by hackers. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced the decision at the beginning of a Cabinet meeting.

The prime minister said he had “agreed” with the official that she would step down. Artiom Cociu will serve as acting head of the agency.

“We agreed with Ms Nicoleta Colomeet, director of the Electronic Governance Agency, that she would step down, and Artiom Cociu will temporarily be appointed as acting director. (…) I am grateful to Ms Colomeet for everything she has done to promote electronic services. I believe services such as EVO and MCabinet have helped popularise digital services. I think we now need to shift the balance away from promotion and towards security,” Vasile Tofan said.

Between October 19 and 23, hackers attempted to access data belonging to approximately one million Moldovans and succeeded in extracting information linked to 750,000 people. According to Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, the operation was allegedly coordinated by foreign actors.
