Ukraine Opposes Separating Moldova From Its EU Accession Path: “We Should Move Forward Together”

Ukraine’s ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Paun Rohovei, opposes the idea of separating Moldova’s European Union accession process from Ukraine’s. The diplomat believes the two countries should continue their European path together, as they share the same aspirations and foreign policy objectives.

“I do not support this idea. I stand firmly by this position, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also mentioned it,” Paun Rohovei said, referring to the possibility of decoupling the two countries’ EU accession processes.

The ambassador noted that separating their European paths could also make the accession process more difficult for the Republic of Moldova.

“I am not sure that trying to separate the two processes would not make things more difficult for us. When we talk about this tandem, we are first and foremost talking about a stable course forward — we are two countries that have the same foreign policy choice and share the same aspirations,” the diplomat said.

Paun Rohovei also stressed that Ukraine has played an important role in Moldova’s European journey and believes the two countries should continue along this path together.

“It would also be the right thing to do, from a moral standpoint, to move forward together,” the ambassador concluded.
