Austria, one of the countries that blocked Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, seems to have a different approach when it comes to its neighboring countries in Eastern Europe. President of Austria, Alexander Van der Bellen, made an important statement during a meeting with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda. According to him, Austria will support Moldova and Ukraine in every possible way on their path to joining the European Union.
“We welcome the desire of Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU. This is encouraging and is good for all of us. We will support these two countries in their path to the EU in every possible way,” Van der Bellen said.
This statement is all the more “important” since Austria was one of the countries that blocked Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, on the grounds that Romania had not made sufficient progress in combating corruption and organized crime.

It is also important to mention that Austria is an important hub for Russian special services, which makes the president’s statement all the more “significant”. The politician added that EU members should continue to stand united in support of an independent Ukraine, signaling a significant change in Austria’s foreign policy approach.
