The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has announced plans to establish a National Central Office in Moldova to combat currency counterfeiting.
“Today, the Government approved the draft law necessary to access the International Convention for the Suppression of Counterfeiting Currency, signed in Geneva in 1929. This initiative will allow Moldovan authorities to address currency counterfeiting more efficiently and effectively, safeguarding citizens’ economic interests and minimizing financial losses. To ensure the implementation of the convention’s provisions and efficient international cooperation, the law mandates the creation of a Specialized Contact Point.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs assumes responsibility for managing this point, establishing a National Central Office within the specialized currency counterfeiting division of the National Investigation Inspectorate under the General Police Inspectorate. This Office will facilitate the exchange of information with other states party to the convention, coordinate investigations into currency counterfeiting cases, and significantly contribute to the prevention and suppression of this phenomenon. These measures aim to create a safer and more predictable economic environment for the benefit of all Moldovan citizens,” the MIA stated.
Authorities noted that in Moldova’s integration into the European Union, accession to this International Convention represents a step toward “rapid and efficient adaptation to European standards, thereby ensuring high-quality services focused on the needs and safety of its citizens.”
