Ala Nemerenco: Without the EU’s support, progress in healthcare would have been much slower

The European Union has significantly advanced Moldova’s healthcare sector. EU support modernized hospital infrastructure, improved medical services, and strengthened institutional capacity, Health Minister Ala Nemerenco told IPN.

The minister emphasized that the EU remains a vital partner for Moldova’s health system by offering assistance through various funding mechanisms and UN agencies. For instance, over the past two years, EU investments contributed 15.2 million lei to rebuild and equip the Emergency Unit at the Institute of Emergency Medicine and 2 million lei for the Bălți Clinical Hospital.

With EU funding, Moldova also acquired nine ambulances and a mobile gynecological clinic. EU support helped upgrade blood storage facilities and equip gynecological examination rooms, with a total budget of €1.3 million.

One of the key EU-backed projects underway is the construction of the Cahul Regional Hospital, financed through a €101 million loan from the European Investment Bank. The Council of Europe Development Bank finances the Balti Regional Hospital, and the EU supports its construction. It provides a €3 million grant to develop its technical design via the Neighbourhood Investment Platform.

EU-backed programs, implemented by the WHO Office in Moldova and co-financed by European countries, trained medical staff in stroke care and emergency response.

Minister Nemerenco stressed that EU-funded projects follow European legislation. It requires financial data, objectives, and beneficiaries. These details appear on the official websites of EU fund managers and the Ministry of Health. Authorities report regularly on project outcomes, ensuring transparency to the public and stakeholders.
