Alarming data in Moldova: In 2023, 21 women lost their lives due to domestic violence

Alarming statistics in the Republic of Moldova. In 2023, 21 women lost their lives due to domestic violence. The information was made public by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Daniela Misail-Nichitin, during the program “Rezoomat,” Thursday, October 10, 2024 edition, broadcast on RLIVE TV.

“With regret, we still record cases of serious bodily injury and deaths. In 2023, 21 women lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. At the same time, the Commission for the Analysis and Monitoring of Cases Resulting in Death and Serious Bodily Harm reviews these cases. The Ministry of Internal Affairs provides the secretariat for this Commission, which aims to objectively analyze each case individually. This allows all central authorities and civil society representatives in the Commission to propose improvements to the domestic violence response mechanism,” said Daniela Misail-Nichitin.

In the Republic of Moldova, the law prohibits all forms and degrees of violence. Individuals must report acts of violence to the police or emergency number 112. Victims are also encouraged to seek help from the Family Justice Center of the Police, a 24/7 multi-disciplinary service that brings together specialists in one location to support victims of domestic and sexual violence by intimate partners, spouses, or others.
