Alexandru Balan, former deputy director of the Security and Intelligence Service of the Republic of Moldova, is being tried in the Republic of Moldova in a separate criminal case, while also under investigation in Romania for treason.
According to the Chisinau Court, Balan is charged with disclosure of state secrets. The case was registered on April 14, and the first hearing is scheduled for April 15 at the court’s Buiucani office.
Balan was detained by Romanian prosecutors in September 2025 in Timisoara, being accused of leaking classified information related to Romania to officers linked to the KGB in Belarus.
Following his detention, the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered his pre-trial detention. However, in March 2026, the High Court of Cassation and Justice of Romania admitted his appeal and replaced the measure with house arrest.
