The Ministry of National Defence of Romania announced that, during the night of April 16–17, surveillance systems detected and tracked two aerial targets near the border amid new drone attacks in the northern area of the Chilia branch of the Danube River. One of the targets is believed to have briefly entered the airspace of Romania.
Authorities issued a RO-Alert message at 00:43 for residents in the northern part of Tulcea County, warning of potential danger. The air alert was lifted at 02:48.
According to the ministry, a specialized team will be sent to the area to conduct investigations and assess the situation.
The institution strongly condemned the actions of the Russian Federation, describing them as a threat to regional security and a serious violation of international law.
Romanian authorities also stated that they remain in constant coordination with allied and national structures, closely monitoring developments in the region.
