Diana Tacu, a representative of Apa Canal Chisinau, reported that the city’s water supply remains unaffected, as the capital receives its water from the Dniester River.

She said the Police of Moldova, Apele Moldovei, and the Environmental Agency have been tasked with investigating the incident, identifying those responsible, and applying legal sanctions for the illegal discharge and pollution of the Bic River.

After collecting and analyzing samples, the Environmental Agency will be able to precisely determine the substance discharged into the river.

“Immediately after images of potential pollution on the Bic River appeared publicly, our water supplier team intervened on-site starting yesterday. During the inspection of the Bic River near Albisoara Street, we found that the discharge of water of unknown origin comes from the stormwater sewer collector. We note that the domestic sewage networks managed by S.A. ‘Apa-Canal Chisinau’ are functioning normally,” Chisinau City Hall representatives stated.

Officials from Apa-Canal Chisinau, Exdrupo, and the Environmental Agency are investigating the case on the ground.

The Inspectorate for Environmental Protection announced on March 19 that it is taking action in the capital after oily patches appeared on the Bic River. Authorities launched emergency measures and said they will also inspect for unauthorized connections between domestic sewage and stormwater networks.
