According to the Parliament’s press service, substitute senior MPs could preside over the first session of the new legislature. The officials specified that the name of the person who will open the new session, following Vladimir Voronin’s refusal, will be announced later.
To identify potential candidates, the lists of the five parties that won seats in Parliament were analyzed. After Vladimir Voronin, the second oldest elected deputy is Nicolae Botgros (born 1953).
Following him are:
- Zinaida Greceanii (BEP, 1956)
- Mihai Druta (PAS, 1957)
- Vera Cernega (BEP, 1957)
- Ana Butucea (PAS, 1958)
- Valeriu Muduc (BEP, 1959)
- Constantin Cheianu (PAS, 1959)
Vladimir Voronin declined to preside over the first session of the elected Parliament, citing alleged irregularities in the parliamentary elections.
According to current rules, the first session of the newly elected Parliament is presided over by the oldest deputy in the legislature.
