The Chisinau Court (Buiucani office) has sentenced Alexandru Balan, former deputy director of the Security and Intelligence Service of the Republic of Moldova, in absentia to 1 year and 6 months in prison for disclosing state secrets and banned him from holding public office for 2 years and 6 months. The General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Moldova confirmed the information to Realitatea.md.
Authorities sent the case to court on April 14, and on April 15, the court held the first hearing and convicted Balan.
At the same time, prosecutors in Romania continue to investigate Balan. Prosecutors from DIICOT sent him to trial on February 27, 2026, on charges of treason and disclosure of classified information. They accuse him of transmitting classified data to intelligence officers from Belarus and Russia during 2024–2025.
In the Republic of Moldova, prosecutors also sent Balan to trial on April 14, 2026, on charges of treason and disclosure of information that endangers national security.
Alexandru Balan served as deputy director of SIS between 2016 and 2018.
