Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu provided details following the closed-door session held at Parliament on Thursday, October 8. According to the speaker, the meeting focused on Moldova’s security, and lawmakers approved a new structure for the Armed Forces.

“The new structure of the Armed Forces was approved. It is about adapting the structure to current conditions. It will contribute to better ensuring the security of the Republic of Moldova,” Grosu said.

Asked about the risk of an escalation amid the war in Ukraine, Igor Grosu said that the front line is far from Moldova.

“There is no imminent danger. The front is far away, in the southern part [of Ukraine]. The Ukrainian army is achieving successes. As for what remains, there are risks related to our airspace and hybrid warfare,” Grosu said.

A closed-door parliamentary session was held to approve the size and structure of the National Army. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi said that the authorities plan to increase the number of military personnel by 2035. The decision will be based on the threats facing Moldova.

The document contains information classified as a state secret, and the authorities said the meeting was held against the backdrop of security risks in the region.

President Maia Sandu said that holding the closed-door session was “a normal procedure” and that classified documents must follow specific procedures.

“Why is the document classified? Because we do not want other countries, especially those that are hostile to the Republic of Moldova, to know these things,” Sandu said.
