Founded in 1978, Chisinau Zoo covers about 25 hectares in the Botanica district of Moldova’s capital. When it first opened, the zoo hosted only 60 animal species. Today, it houses around 1,100 birds and animals, many listed in both the International Red Book and the Red Book of the Republic of Moldova.
Its residents include the European mouflon, Bengal tiger, leopard, lion, African lynx, Patagonian hare, several monkey species, mountain goats, zebras, camels, owls, crocodiles, turtles, snakes, swans, ducks, and many others.
Chisinau Zoo operates under the authority of Chisinau City Hall and is a full member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA). It also belongs to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) and the International Animal Record System.
In recent years, Chisinau Zoo has undergone major modernization — from infrastructure upgrades to acquiring new species. The zoo developed a new area for predatory animals, built enclosures for bears, birds of prey, and primates, and rehabilitated facilities for recently acquired animals to ensure better living conditions. It also refurbished access paths throughout the park.
Chisinau City Hall continues to improve living conditions for the animals, creating an environment that supports the expansion and diversification of rare species in the zoo’s collection.
For the first time in 40 years, workers repaired the main stairs and entrance ramp. They also installed a new access ramp for visitors with special needs and parents with children. Visitors can now relax in one of four newly built gazebos. The zoo’s education center, where children and teenagers learn about flora and fauna, has also been renovated.
As part of its mission to promote environmental education, the zoo launched the “Children Learn About Animals” initiative to inspire love for nature and wildlife among young visitors.
Visitors can join guided tours, and at the Rural Courtyard, children can interact with domestic animals and birds. The zoo also offers a playground for younger guests.
The zoo’s administration actively shares updates, photos, and videos on its official Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram accounts, showcasing new arrivals and events.
