President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, took part in the second meeting of the European Coalition Against Drugs, held on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, where European leaders discussed joint measures to combat drug trafficking and organized crime.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni launched the coalition in October 2025 as a coordinated response by European states to growing threats from criminal networks.

According to the presidential administration, leaders reaffirmed that combating illicit financial flows, money laundering, and corruption remains a key component of an effective anti-drug strategy. They stressed the need to adopt mechanisms to sanction assets derived from criminal activities linked to drug trafficking, including proposals currently under development at the level of the European Union.

Participants placed strong emphasis on strengthening operational cooperation between states and improving information exchange, including in areas such as the use of cryptocurrencies for money laundering.

Moldova’s participation reflects authorities’ efforts to counter cross-border crime, particularly in the context of increased risks linked to the country’s geographic position and the regional security situation. Officials view European cooperation as essential for strengthening national capacities in this field.

On the sidelines of the summit, Maia Sandu also held bilateral meetings with several leaders, including Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
