Cross-Border Rail Travel to Romania Set to Accelerate: EU Commits €3.5 Million to Modernize Moldova’s Railways

The European Union will invest €3.5 million in Moldova’s railway infrastructure. With this funding, authorities will modernize the railway connections between Iasi and Ungheni.

The project will cut travel time between the two countries and boost cross-border rail capacity.

The project also includes the first electrification of a railway line in the Republic of Moldova, which, according to the EU Delegation in Chisinau, will eliminate a major infrastructure bottleneck at the border. Moldova and Ukraine joined the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)—the EU’s strategic investment program for transport, energy, and digital infrastructure—in 2023. This initiative is part of that broader program.

“The initiative reflects the European Union’s strong commitment to supporting the Republic of Moldova’s integration into the European transport network while also strengthening regional connectivity along the EU–Moldova–Ukraine transport corridor,” stated European diplomats in Moldova.

As part of the Connecting Europe Facility, the European Commission has selected 94 projects totaling €2.8 billion to support sustainable and connected mobility across Europe, including railway upgrades.
