Today, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling affirming that the designation “Romanian language” remains entrenched in the entirety of Moldova’s legislation, including its Constitution.
Before this ruling, a group of lawmakers had lodged a formal request with the Constitutional Court, seeking an assessment of the decision to rename the state language from Moldovan to Romanian throughout Moldova’s legal framework, including the Constitution.
Consequently, the legislators contested a law mandating the substitution of terms such as “Moldovan language,” “state language,” “official language,” “our language,” and “mother language” with the term “Romanian language” in all legislative acts enacted by the parliament.
