Maia Sandu has promulgated the decisions by the Republic of Moldova to denounce the Agreement on the Establishment, the related protocol, and the statute of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Authorities have published the acts in the Official Gazette and will notify CIS member states of the decision.

Tatiana Barac, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova, stated that after publication, authorities will notify the CIS, and the agreements will cease to be valid after a 12-month period.

Officials in Chisinau say that Moldova will continue relations with CIS member states through bilateral and multilateral platforms even after withdrawal. They also note that the country will remain a party to several treaties concluded within the CIS framework, particularly in the trade, economic, and social fields.

On the other hand, the Kremlin has argued that Moldovan authorities cannot unilaterally decide which agreements to retain and that the final decision should involve all CIS member states.

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova voted on April 2, in final reading, to denounce the CIS founding agreement and statute. Chisinau initiated the withdrawal process after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, citing violations of principles such as respect for territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty among member states.
