Deputy Speaker of Parliament Doina Gherman says that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine need each other in the process of European integration and will continue to support one another on their path toward the European Union. She made the statement during a joint press conference with Oleksandr Merezhko, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The remarks follow a joint meeting of the parliamentary foreign policy committees of Moldova and Ukraine. Doina Gherman says the meeting takes place at an important moment for both countries’ European path.
In this context, she welcomes the announcement by the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union regarding steps toward opening the first cluster of negotiation chapters for Moldova and Ukraine. She says this step provides predictability for institutions involved in the accession process and may help attract investment and boost economic development.
“The Republic of Moldova needs a European Ukraine, and Ukraine needs the Republic of Moldova in the European space,” Doina Gherman says.
Oleksandr Merezhko thanks the Republic of Moldova for its support since the beginning of the war and says both countries share a common future in the EU. He emphasizes that Moldova and Ukraine share the same democratic values and must continue cooperation at parliamentary and institutional levels.
