Increasing the attractiveness of universities in the Republic of Moldova is a priority for the Ministry of Education and Research, as half of the high school graduates in the country choose to continue their studies abroad. This is stated by Minister Dan Perciun, according to whom the state is trying to enhance the appeal of universities by improving university infrastructure and diversifying the educational offerings. According to the minister, the authorities aim to increase the percentage of high school graduates who choose to pursue their studies in the Republic of Moldova to 75%, as reported by ipn.md.
Thanks to a World Bank project, by the year 2025, several higher education institutions in the Republic of Moldova will be modernized through the provision of study rooms, laboratories, and research centers. The Minister of Education and Research states that by improving university infrastructure, the authorities intend to persuade high school graduates to continue their studies in the Republic of Moldova.
“Increasing the attractiveness of studying in the Republic of Moldova is a priority for us. Today, half of high school graduates choose to study abroad. We aim to increase the proportion of those who choose to study in the Republic of Moldova, and this depends on the prestige of our country’s universities, the quality of education, reputation, and study conditions. We must intervene in all of these aspects. For several years, the Ministry of Education, in partnership with the World Bank, has been implementing a project to modernize universities. 25 million euros have been made available for improving study conditions, and the funds are in the process of being utilized to bring university conditions to a European level,” said Dan Perciun.
Additionally, according to the minister, to enhance the attractiveness of universities in the Republic of Moldova, the educational offerings have been diversified. Thanks to the “Professions of the Future” program, new innovative specialties have been introduced that ensure a connection between the studies and the job market.

“As part of the ‘Professions of the Future’ program, for specialties such as game design and animation, we have 162 students enrolled at USM, of which only 28 are on a budget, indicating a significant interest in these new and attractive degrees. At UTM, we have 81 enrolled students, of which only 24 are on a budget. Graduates are willing to pay to study these specialties in the Republic of Moldova because they are in line with the world we live in. At the same time, of course, it is challenging to compete with European universities, especially since some of them also offer scholarships to our students. But the objective must be that at least 75% of those who graduate choose to study in the Republic of Moldova. Otherwise, given the demographic situation, we will face a complex situation when the number of students will dramatically decrease, and reorganization decisions will be necessary to keep up with demographic changes,” added the Minister of Education and Research.
Recently, five universities in the Republic of Moldova have been accredited at the European level, allowing the recognition and compatibility of the diplomas issued by these institutions in European Union countries. These universities include the State University of Moldova, the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, “Alecu Russo” State University of BălÈ›i, “Bogdan Petriceicu HaÈ™deu” State University of Cahul, and the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Fine Arts.
