EU4Moldova: Local Communities Program Invests €5.85 Million in Edinet Water Treatment Plan

The EU4Moldova: Local Communities program provided €5.85 million to fund the construction of the Edinet Water Treatment Plant (WTP), a significant investment that will supply clean drinking water to approximately 25,800 residents of Edinet Municipality and the city of Cupcini.

“I’m glad that the residents of Edinet and Cupcini will benefit from clean drinking water following the opening of the new treatment plant. Access to clean water represents a fundamental right. Caring for people and upholding all fundamental rights remain essential for joining the European Union. As I’ve said before, Moldova is not alone on this path. The €5.85 million we allocated for the construction of the treatment plant represents an investment in the well-being of 25,800 people,” said Jānis Mažeiks, the European Union Ambassador to Moldova.

The investments include building a new water treatment facility with a production capacity of 5,184 m³/day on the site of Pumping Station No. 4, constructing a new electricity supply system, and reconstructing high- and low-voltage electrical installations (10 kV line). The project also rehabilitates one of two water storage tanks. Additionally, the team will build a new intake (sorb) and raw water pumping station at the Racovat/Badragii-Vechi reservoir, with a 90 l/s capacity and a 1 km pipeline to connect it to the existing adduction pipe. Finally, the project will modernize the electromechanical components of three intermediate pumping stations. It includes upgrades to pumps and electrical systems to ensure more efficient and reliable operation.

Austrian Ambassador to Moldova, Stella Avallone, added:

“For years, Austria has played an active role in improving Moldova’s water infrastructure. Through this investment in Edinet and additional efforts in Cupcini and Bratuseni, we proudly support communities in developing safe, sustainable, and resilient water supply systems that meet people’s needs and comply with environmental standards.”

These infrastructure investments will provide access to clean water—still a major challenge in Edineț district, where outdated infrastructure has long limited communities, residents, and businesses from accessing safe drinking water. The partial removal of obsolete system components will improve the overall efficiency of the water supply network and mark a first step toward future investments aimed at reducing water losses and leaks.

Corneliu Cirimpei declared:

“This project reflects the Moldovan Government’s strategic priority to modernize water and sanitation services and ensure nationwide access to safe drinking water. We thank our international partners for helping us realize this long-awaited project.”

The European Union (EU), Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and the Republic of Moldova fund this project. The Austrian Development Agency (ADA) implements it as part of the EU4Moldova: Local Communities program, which the EU, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), and Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Polish Aid – jointly support.
