European Commission Visits Chișinău to Assess Anti-Corruption Judicial Reforms

A delegation from the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission), led by its honorary president, Hanna Suchocka, is currently in Chișinău. The visit is taking place in the context of preparing the Commission’s opinion on the draft law regarding the anti-corruption judicial system and the modification of certain legislative acts.

The Venice Commission delegation will meet with members of the Legal, Appointments, and Immunities Committee. Additionally, a meeting with the President of the country, Maia Sandu, is planned. Officials will also hold discussions with representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Anti-Corruption Center, and the Superior Council of Magistracy. The visit’s agenda also includes meetings with the leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, and the National Integrity Authority.

Subsequently, the Venice Commission’s opinion on the draft law regarding the anti-corruption judicial system and the modification of certain legislative acts will be examined and adopted during the plenary session of the Commission.

The draft law on the anti-corruption judicial system and the modification of certain legislative acts is a legislative initiative of the country’s President, Maia Sandu. The document aims to strengthen efforts to combat corruption and ensure a speedy and high-quality examination of complex corruption cases. It regulates the organization and activities of the specialized court for corruption cases and the anti-corruption panel of the Chișinău Court of Appeal.
