On Friday, November 7, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced during a plenary session in Chisinau the official opening of the European Parliament’s Office in the Republic of Moldova. She stated that the inauguration sends a clear signal of the European Union’s commitment to the Eastern Partnership countries and to Moldova’s European trajectory.

“Choosing Europe has always meant choosing solidarity,” Metsola said, emphasizing that the European Union rests on cooperation and mutual support among its member states. She pointed out that this solidarity extends to joint efforts to diversify electricity supplies and reduce dependence on Russian resources.

“The European Parliament was the first to call for an end to dependence on Russian energy. Moldova’s future is a European one, which means you will never be alone on this journey, no matter how difficult it may be,” Metsola declared, reaffirming the European Parliament’s full commitment to supporting Moldova’s authorities.

She assured that the European Parliament will do everything necessary to remain by the Republic of Moldova’s side in its effort to join the European Union, stressing that EU support for Chisinau extends beyond politics to financial and technical assistance.

“We were the first EU institution to call for granting candidate status to the Republic of Moldova. We have consistently condemned all forms of foreign interference aimed at undermining your stability, and we have remained steadfast in our support for Moldova’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity,” Metsola emphasized.

The European Parliament President also highlighted the EU’s financial support for Moldova’s reform efforts:

“We have allocated €1.9 billion to support your reforms and are already providing significant pre-financing. We have strengthened the free trade area and helped Moldova join SEPA, so that young people from the Republic of Moldova can enjoy the same opportunities as anyone in the European Union,” she said.

Metsola further underscored the importance of practical support throughout the EU accession process:

“Having taken part in my own country’s accession process to the European Union, I know how essential it is to have committed, present, and engaged partners by your side,” she noted.

In this context, Metsola explained that the new European Parliament Office in Chisinau will enable direct, day-to-day cooperation with Moldovan institutions.

“This office will be here, on the ground, every day — supporting you and assisting you in all the efforts you are making,” Metsola stated, addressing the President of the Moldovan Parliament and the members of Parliament present at the session.
