Exhibition of Winter Folk Theater Masks at the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History

On December 27, 2024, at 14:00, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and the Culture and Tourism Department of the Ungheni District Council invite you to the opening of the exhibition “The Carnival of Time: Masks and Stories,” featuring masks from the heritage of the Craft Centers for Children in Ungheni. The event will be accompanied by a parade of traditional masks from the village of Macaresti, including the Goat, Little Horse, and Stork games.

The masks are handcrafted by members of the Craft Centers from Petresti village – “Ca la noi,” Floritoaia Veche village – “Tarancuta,” Ungheni town – “Albinuta” and “Regina Maria.” Visitors will discover various types of masks, each with its symbolism and meaning, and understand the role of winter folk theater in Romanian village life during the transition between years.

The masks, from the simplest to the most intricate, involve symbolism, artistry, creativity, and skill and are designed to impress with their frightening appearance and to ward off evil spirits.

These valuable pieces, which once played a significant role in annual customs, are becoming increasingly rare, risking the disappearance of village traditions. In this context, creative centers and museums have the mission to preserve and pass on these customs to the younger generation.
