The U.S. authorities suspended immigrant visas due to internal political processes in the United States. Christopher Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, told IPN that the measure is temporary and does not specifically target Moldova, but affects citizens of around 100 countries.

Smith explained that the decision is based on U.S. security analyses. At the same time, a global review is underway to assess the sustainability of foreign nationals moving to the U.S. and whether immigrants might place a burden on public resources.

“This is not about Moldova specifically. We are doing this for nearly 100 countries worldwide. We remain in close contact with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs during this review and will keep them informed as the process progresses. The key criteria we analyze are the security of the United States and the sustainability of those immigrating here,” Smith said.

Since January 21, 2026, the United States has suspended immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including Moldova. Non-immigrant visas will continue to be issued, and all other related procedures remain available.
