Foreign Nationals Legally Residing in Moldova to Receive New Identity Document

Foreign nationals residing legally in the Republic of Moldova will receive a new, more secure, and efficient identity document that meets international standards.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), one of the most significant updates removes domicile and temporary-residence details from the card’s physical content. This change aims to cut costs for foreign residents when they change their address and to streamline administrative procedures.

For employers, the new format means less bureaucracy and faster document processing. Authorities will update foreigners’ residence data in real time in the State Population Register without issuing a new card after every change.

“Another innovation introduces a qualified certificate for electronic signatures into the new residence card. It will allow foreign citizens to identify themselves electronically and access digital public services, aligning the documentation process with European digitalization standards.

Moldova can modernize identity documents, strengthen personal-data security, and digitalize public services in the Republic of Moldova,” the MIA states.
