From Lisbon to Novosibirsk: Preliminary List of Voting Sections to Be Opened Abroad

Up to 209 polling stations will be established abroad for the presidential elections and the referendum on October 20. The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has published the preliminary list of locations where citizens can exercise their right to vote for the head of state and express their position on the country’s accession to the European Union.

The CEC prepared the document based on data regarding Moldovan participation at all previously established polling stations abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also provided information about Moldovans residing abroad.

According to the published list, Italy could open more than 60 polling stations. Russia might have up to 29 polling stations for the Moldovan presidential elections and the referendum on EU accession, Germany – 23, France and the USA – 21 each, the UK – 17, and Romania – 16.

“The preliminary analysis of the information about potential polling station locations abroad aims to inform voters who will be outside the country on October 20, 2024. It will help them understand the likelihood of having a polling station in the most convenient locality or host country for exercising their right to vote.”

The Central Electoral Commission representatives state that the preliminary information did not account for the final data regarding the fulfillment of conditions related to obtaining approvals from the host country’s competent authorities and ensuring the technical and logistical infrastructure for the polling stations abroad. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collecting this information, and the interinstitutional group created by the CEC is verifying it. Based on the evolving data, there may be changes in the probability of establishing polling stations (high, medium, or low).
