Gagauz Writing and Language Day at the Parliament in PICTURES

An exhibition presenting Gagauz personalities, customs, and cultural traditions was inaugurated at the Parliament. The event was organized in the context of the Day of Gagauz Writing and Language, marked annually on 27 April. The inauguration was attended by the Speaker of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Moldova, Katarina Fried, members of parliament, representatives of academia and civil society in Gagauzia.

Attending the opening of the exhibition, the Speaker of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, referred to the historical dimension of the event. “Language, tradition, history, religion are things of identity that mark any people, any ethnic group. We need to see what has been done, what has not been done, and what more needs to be done to highlight and promote the Gagauz language, to give children and adults a chance to study it and pass it on to future generations,” the head of the legislature said.

For her part, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Republic of Moldova, Katarina Fried, stressed that by promoting greater awareness and understanding of the Gagauz language and culture, we can pave the way for social cohesion and harmony. Katarina Fried also mentioned that the Swedish Embassy remains open to further supporting institutionalized and sustainable dialogue in Gagauzia and will continue to be fully engaged in supporting the European path and the modernization efforts of the Republic of Moldova.

The event was organized on the platform of the Parliamentary Working Group on Gagauzia and facilitated by CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, with financial support from Sweden.

The exhibition will be open to visitors until 22 April, Monday to Friday, 8 am-5 pm.
