Acting Governor of Gagauzia Ilia Uzun convened representatives of several public organizations in the autonomous region. Following the meeting, Ivan Burgudji, Mihail Vlah, Fiodor Dobrov, Ivan Fuior, Mihail Țurcan, Valentina Ianioglo and Boris Novac called for the regional elections for the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and the position of governor, currently scheduled for November 2026, to be postponed until spring 2027, disinfo.md reports.
The initiative comes as political parties and activists in the autonomy, as well as mayors of Gagauz villages and towns, have expressed their willingness to participate in the electoral process under rules agreed with Chisinau. Many local leaders have attributed their position to fatigue caused by the prolonged institutional crisis and continued uncertainty.
Some have referred to the group formed around the initiative as the “Gagauz GKChP” and linked its position to the declining influence of supporters of fugitive Moldovan politician Ilan Shor. According to these critics, postponing the elections would allow Shor to retain his influence over the region.
Elections for the position of governor and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia are scheduled for November 15, 2026. The submission of documents for participation in the elections has already begun.
