In the village of Gaidar, in the Gagauzia autonomous region, one of the rarest examples of rural architecture in the Republic of Moldova has been preserved – a windmill built in 1864 entirely from wood, including its internal mechanisms.
The mill’s components were brought from Ukraine and assembled in Gaidar, where for generations it served as a place where villagers came to grind wheat and corn brought in from the fields. Although the structure may appear simple, its internal mechanism is remarkably ingenious: the entire milling process could be controlled by a single person.
Inside the mill is a system of wooden wheels, axles and gears that transferred the power of the wind to the millstones. As the sails turned, the entire mechanism came to life, transforming wheat grains into flour.
The Gaidar windmill continued operating until 2005. Although modern technologies had long replaced traditional milling methods, the structure remained a symbol of the craftsmanship and rural life of the past.
Only four windmills are believed to remain in the Republic of Moldova, with the Gaidar mill considered the best preserved of them. This is why it has become the subject of an extensive conservation project in recent years.
Restoration Supported by the European Union
The restoration was carried out with the support of the European Union through the Confidence Building Measures Programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The conservation and restoration works cost more than EUR 50,000.
Specialists focused on preserving as many original elements of the structure as possible. The wood was treated and reinforced, the internal mechanisms were repaired, and the mill’s structure was restored as closely as possible to its original form.
The goal was not only to preserve the historic monument but also to develop it as a tourist attraction.
Today, visitors can discover more than a structure that is over a century and a half old. The windmill offers a glimpse into the history of rural communities in southern Moldova – a story of simple yet ingenious technology in which the wind powered wooden mechanisms that transformed harvested grain into flour.
