President Maia Sandu is attending the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, hosted by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The presidential press service reports that Sandu will deliver a speech at the high-level segment of COP29 and hold bilateral meetings with other heads of state and high-ranking officials.
COP serves as the primary international forum for tackling climate change, bringing together global leaders, business representatives, and civil society organizations each year to coordinate efforts and propose tangible solutions. This year’s event will focus on financing the global shift to a low-carbon future, a transition requiring trillions of dollars in investment to support greenhouse gas reduction and aid communities affected by climate change impacts.
In light of record-breaking temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events, COP29 aims to rally international support for measures that create a safer, more sustainable future, especially in the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions. Moldova’s participation underscores its commitment to environmental protection and climate adaptation, as well as its dedication to strengthening partnerships with global allies in these efforts.
