How Moldova Will Cover Electricity Consumption in January 2025: Details on Local Production and Imports

For January 2025, SA Energocom announced that it will meet the electricity consumption needs of the Republic of Moldova (on the right bank of the Dniester River) through a combination of local production and imports from Romania.

Thermal power plants in Chisinau and Balti will generate over 127,000 MWh, accounting for approximately 28% of total consumption. Additionally, renewable energy sources will contribute 46,000 MWh (10%), including installations with fixed tariffs set by ANRE and those operating on the free market. However, renewable energy sources depend on weather conditions and cannot be considered reliable or continuous.

The remaining 62% of energy needs will be covered by imports from Romania. Most imported energy—about 178,000 MWh (39% of the total)—will be purchased through the OPCOM energy exchange, while 105,000 MWh (23%) will come from bilateral contracts.

SA Energocom has worked to secure the most advantageous contracts for consumers in Moldova, considering consumption fluctuations between day and night, weekdays and weekends, as well as price offers. Furthermore, Energocom will collaborate with transmission system operators in Romania and Moldova to ensure energy delivery according to contractual commitments. It is also important to note that imports from Romania depend on the available commercial capacity at the border.
