Gagauzia holds a unique status within the Republic of Moldova, operating under its fiscal system. All taxes and fees collected within the region remain under its control, and authorities manage them autonomously.
Unlike other regions of the country, Gagauzia does not contribute to the state budget but still receives financial transfers from the government in Chisinau, according to an analysis published by BANI.MD. These funds are for development, infrastructure projects, and economic growth initiatives.
Between 2022 and 2024, Gagauzia received 151 million lei to fund 10 major projects focused on improving infrastructure and raising the quality of life for residents.
The government-funded projects to rehabilitate public infrastructure, renovate administrative and educational buildings, and develop water and sewage networks.

According to government data, through the “European Village” program, 19 projects have been implemented in Gagauzia over the past two years, with a total investment exceeding 73 million lei. These initiatives focus on modernizing local infrastructure. Completed projects include roof renovations at the kindergarten in Ferapontievca, upgrades to the Cultural Center in Chioselia Rusa, and improvements to educational facilities in Joltai.
Also, local administration buildings and social centers, such as the Tomai town hall and the Cultural Center in Gaidar, were modernized.
Several towns, including Cismichioi, Copceac, Cotovscoe, Carbalia, Cazaclia, Chiriet-Lunga, and Cioc-Maidan, benefited from these investments, with many projects already completed, demonstrating a continued commitment to rural infrastructure development.
In terms of water and sewage infrastructure, three Gagauz localities received funding totaling 15 million lei for water supply systems. Additionally, the municipality of Comrat received over $10 million from the government for the wastewater treatment plants and the improvement of water networks.
Renewable energy projects are also a priority for the central government in Gagauzia. Localities such as Cotovscoe, Besalma, and Ceadir-Lunga received 9.5 million lei in funding to implement eco-friendly energy solutions, contributing to a more sustainable energy system.
For economic development, Gagauzia received 45 million lei to support local businesses. An additional 15 million lei was invested in increasing Comrat’s attractiveness as a tourist destination, while 3 million lei went into public space rehabilitation in Ceadir-Lunga, benefiting over 22,000 people.
Between 2022 and 2024, the government allocated state budget funds to Gagauzia for essential development projects. Authorities have invested in local infrastructure, education, water, sewage, and renewable energy to modernize and strengthen Gagauz autonomy. These investments improve daily life for residents, boost the region’s economy and tourism, and reinforce Gagauzia’s autonomy within Moldova’s national development framework.
