Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban has commented on the incident that broke out on Tuesday, October 6, in the square near the city’s Cathedral, after Buiucani sector deputy pretor Pavel Movila was detained by police.

The conflict reportedly began after excavation works were carried out by Termoelectrica to repair a fault in the city’s heating network.

Ceban criticized the police response, claiming that several police units were deployed to the area.

“Eight police crews came here, and they also sent a minibus full of masked officers… Instead of catching drug traffickers, instead of catching those who are (…) instead of removing abandoned cars, instead of helping people in need, they come here to impose order before the city’s day, to harrow this park,” Ceban said.

The mayor said the municipality had documented the police intervention and that complaints had been filed with the Prosecutor’s Office and other institutions.

“We invested a lot here. (…) And they continue to want to destroy it. They don’t know how to build; they only know how to destroy,” Ceban said.

Pavel Movilă, who had been detained during the incident, has since been released.

The dispute reportedly started after the Buiucani deputy pretor allegedly obstructed Termoelectrica employees from accessing the site of the heating network failure.
