The water intake station in Leova continues to operate without interruption despite the critically low water level in the Prut River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder says the authorities are constantly monitoring the situation and are prepared to intervene to ensure an uninterrupted water supply for the population.

The minister returned to the banks of the Prut in Leova, where work was carried out last week to ensure water could still be collected despite the hydrological drought.

“As you can see, the water level here remains just as low. We can see this hydrometric gauge, which is practically left hanging in the air, as the water level has already fallen below it,” Gheorghe Hajder said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

According to the minister, the authorities are continuously monitoring the river’s flow and the operation of the water intake station so they can intervene in time and prevent potential disruptions to the water supply. The situation is also being monitored on the Dniester River, which supplies water to several localities.

“Our priority at this moment is to ensure a continuous water supply for everyone. We are monitoring the situation and are ready to intervene wherever necessary,” the minister said.

Although rainfall is forecast for next week, preliminary data indicate that it will not be sufficient to replenish the water reserves depleted during the past months of drought. Nevertheless, the authorities are hoping for a slight improvement in the situation.

The Ministry of Environment says it remains in contact with local authorities and water supply and sewage service operators to ensure that the population has access to water.
