Maia Sandu and EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis Discuss Moldova’s Economic Integration

Moldovan President Maia Sandu met on October 1 with European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification Valdis Dombrovskis, who is visiting Chisinau.

The officials discussed European Union support for Moldova’s economic development, the country’s integration into the European market, progress in the energy sector and ongoing reforms.

Maia Sandu highlighted that the EU is Moldova’s main trading partner and the primary destination for Moldovan exports. She said the gradual integration of the Moldovan economy into the European market is creating new opportunities for businesses and attracting investment.

The president and the European commissioner also discussed reforms being implemented as part of Moldova’s EU accession process and progress made in several areas.

These include meeting commitments under the Moldova Growth Plan, simplifying and digitalizing procedures for businesses, combating undeclared work, and improving the management of public investments and budget spending.

According to the Presidency, these reforms, together with local public administration reform, are intended to make institutions more efficient, improve the use of public funds and bring better-quality services closer to citizens.

In the energy sector, Sandu highlighted the diversification of Moldova’s natural gas supplies, investments in electricity interconnections with the European Union and the growing share of renewable energy production.

The next stage, which is already being prepared, includes additional investments in electricity networks, energy storage capacity and energy efficiency.

Valdis Dombrovskis is visiting Chisinau on October 1–2. His programme includes meetings with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and members of the government, National Bank of Moldova Governor Anca Dragu, representatives of the business community and members of Parliament’s Economy, Budget and Finance Committee.
