President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has awarded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy the Order of the Republic, Moldova’s highest state distinction. The decree was signed on August 24, as Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of its independence.

On the same occasion, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed a message of support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, noting that Moldova and Ukraine gained independence 35 years ago.

“We know how difficult the path of a country defending its freedom, sovereignty and right to decide its own future is,” Grosu wrote.

He stressed that Ukrainians have been defending their country for more than four years against Russia’s war, describing their courage and sacrifice as difficult to put into words. According to Grosu, Ukraine’s resistance protects not only its own security but also that of Moldova and Europe.

“We, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, thank you for the lesson of courage and love for your country. We will continue to support Ukraine in its just struggle for freedom and territorial integrity,” the Parliament Speaker said.

Grosu also highlighted the illumination of the Moldovan Parliament building in the colors of the Ukrainian flag on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day and on Ukraine’s Flag Day.
