The government has expressed support for President Maia Sandu’s initiative aimed at preventing convicted individuals from fleeing through the Transnistrian region. Authorities say actors from the justice sector will also take part in developing the proposed solutions.

“The government supports President Maia Sandu’s initiative and, together with other relevant stakeholders in the justice sector, will propose solutions to the issues raised,” the government’s press service said.

President Maia Sandu stated at a press conference on December 30 that she is dissatisfied with cases in which convicted persons or individuals under criminal investigation escape to the Transnistrian region and avoid serving their sentences. She called on the government and Parliament to identify concrete solutions and proposed simplifying the procedure for placing such individuals on wanted lists.

According to the head of state, travel bans alone do not provide sufficient safeguards in the context of the Republic of Moldova, given the existence of a region not controlled by the constitutional authorities.
