On the occasion of Sovereignty Day, President Maia Sandu said that Moldova’s European path is rooted in the 1990 decision of Moldovans to break away from the Soviet regime.

“Thirty-six years ago, Moldovans fought for sovereignty in order to decide their own destiny. Today, Moldova is truly building its own destiny. The path we are on — European integration — began with our parents and grandparents, who on 23 June 1990 chose to break away from the Soviet regime,” she said in a video message posted on social media.

The president also stressed that Moldova’s sovereignty and independence must be protected, referring to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“Moscow, unfortunately, has never respected our sovereignty and independence. And today, the Kremlin regime seeks to destroy Ukraine’s sovereignty through bombs and crimes. We have a duty to protect sovereignty, independence, and peace,” she said.

According to Sandu, European integration is the way for Moldova to strengthen its security, democracy, and sovereignty, as only within the European Union the country can ensure safety and stability.

Moldova marks 36 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty, passed on 23 June 1990 by deputies of the former Supreme Soviet of the Moldavian SSR, which established the primacy of republican legislation and marked a key step toward independence declared on 27 August 1991.
