Maia Sandu on the reunification of the country: “We need a geopolitical opportunity, and it can happen”

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stressed in an interview with TV8 that the authorities in Chisinau want the country to be reunited peacefully. Chisinau has a vision for a solution to the Transnistrian conflict, but it depends on the geopolitical situation.

“We need a geopolitical opportunity, and it may come. We don’t know. There is economic reintegration, which is a much longer process and for which we need to have a very concrete plan with costs with well-defined stages, and that is what we are working on. We have to rebuild the banking system. The tax system in the Transnistrian region needs to be adjusted. We must have concrete plans and resources for these elements,” said Maia Sandu.

The head of state noted that she has not made official trips to the left bank of the Dniester to maintain stability but is open to meeting with citizens there when they come to the right bank.

“There are some artificially created impediments by the regime there, and if I cannot meet the citizens, I have no other reason to go there,” she said.

As a reminder, talks on the Transnistrian settlement remain blocked due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with Moscow and Kyiv having the status of mediators in the “5+2” negotiation format alongside the OSCE. The EU and the US have the status of observers.
