During her visit to Germany, President Maia Sandu received the Franz Josef Strauss Award from the Hanns Seidel Foundation in recognition of her strong commitment to democracy, freedom, and Moldova’s European integration.
President Sandu announced that she would donate the €10,000 prize to support efforts to preserve the musical heritage of composer Eugen Doga, one of Moldova’s most celebrated cultural figures.
“This award honors the efforts of all Moldovans who contribute, day by day, to strengthening democracy in our country. It recognizes all the people in our region who, despite challenges, choose courage, truth, and peace,” President Sandu stated.
The Franz Josef Strauss Award, named after the former Bavarian leader known for championing a united Europe honors international figures who promote democratic values and help strengthen peace and freedom across Europe.

The award ceremony occurred in Munich, where President Sandu met with Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder and Hanns Seidel Foundation President Markus Ferber. They discussed deepening cooperation with Bavaria in economic development, security, education, and regional growth.
Officials emphasized that Bavaria, one of Germany’s most economically advanced states, plays a key role in expanding ties between Moldova and Germany, particularly in sectors like automotive manufacturing, advanced technology, agriculture, and tourism.
