President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova supports Nicusor Dan in the second round of Romania’s presidential elections. She made the statement during a podcast hosted by the Presidency. Sandu said she hopes to see a strong, European Romania that will continue to stand by Moldova on its European path, IPN reports.
“We truly want to maintain a strong relationship with Romania. I will support Nicusor Dan,” the president stated.
Maia Sandu welcomed the mobilization of Moldovans holding Romanian citizenship in the first round and linked their high turnout to the challenging regional context.

“We feel the risks, because we’ve been facing them for some time. We’re in a more difficult situation here in Moldova. I believe we can mobilize even more for the next elections,” Sandu added.
In the first round, she did not express support for any candidate.
AUR candidate George Simion received 40.96% of the vote, while Nicusor Dan earned 20.99%. They will face off in the second round on May 18. Romanian citizens abroad can vote on May 16, 17, and 18 at polling stations, including 64 in the Republic of Moldova.
