President Maia Sandu declared on Friday, November 7, that the Republic of Moldova has achieved the greatest progress among all European Union candidate states. She emphasized that the newly elected Parliament, which holds a clear pro-European majority, has the mission to complete the country’s preparation for EU accession.

Sandu thanked the European Parliament for its consistent political and financial support, including the approval of the Moldova Growth Plan, and highlighted the importance of opening the European Parliament Liaison Office in Chișinău, which will help align Moldova’s national legislation with European standards.

“I am glad to welcome you again to Chișinău. Your last visit took place on a memorable day for us — at the ‘European Moldova’ National Assembly. Tens of thousands of people came to the square to say they want the Republic of Moldova to become part of the European family. And you confirmed to us then that Moldova is Europe, and Europe is Moldova,” Sandu said during a joint press conference with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

“Since then, Moldovans have chosen Europe again and again — in the presidential elections, in the referendum through which we anchored our European path in the Constitution, and this September, in the parliamentary elections.

This new Parliament, with a clear pro-European mandate, now has the responsibility to finalize the Republic of Moldova’s preparation for EU accession.

Your message today in the Parliament of Moldova was very clear — the European Parliament will do everything to ensure that the Republic of Moldova becomes part of the European family.

And I want to thank you very much for your support. Thank you to the European Parliament and to all MEPs for constantly supporting Moldova throughout these difficult years. Thank you for your political support, for the resolutions through which you defended our democracy and our European integration process,” Sandu added.

The President also expressed gratitude for the EU’s financial backing:

“Thank you for your financial support and for the swift approval of the Moldova Growth Plan, which means economic development, better infrastructure, hospitals, and schools — more security for our people.

Dear Roberta, today Moldova is modernizing and strengthening its institutions. We are building bridges, roads, and power lines that connect us to the EU and make us stronger. We are integrating our economy into the European market and preparing our country for accession.”

Referring to the European Commission’s 2025 Enlargement Report, Sandu noted that it confirms Moldova’s remarkable progress:

“The enlargement report published this week confirms that Moldova has made the most progress among all candidate countries. It’s true, we started later on this path, but now we are catching up fast. We are working seriously, aligning with European legislation, and getting closer step by step to EU standards. European institutions see and appreciate the pace of our progress. We still have much to do, but we also have strong support.”

Sandu also emphasized that the newly opened European Parliament Liaison Office in Chișinău will play a key role in the country’s legislative harmonization efforts:

“The opening of the European Parliament Liaison Office in Chișinău will help us align our national legislation with that of the European Union. We are talking about approximately 3,000 European acts that need to be transposed into over 1,000 national acts. It is a huge effort, and the support of the European Parliament will make this process clearer, more efficient, and better coordinated.

We are grateful for this consistent partnership. We will continue to work with ambition and determination, confident that the pace will remain steady on both sides.

We count on your continued support — on the support of the European Parliament — in this significant effort for us, for the Republic of Moldova, but one that is vital for the freedom and well-being of our citizens,” Maia Sandu concluded.
