Maia Sandu will deprive the former Chief of Staff of the National Army, General Igor Gorgan, of state awards and military ranks

The head of state and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Maia Sandu, will deprive the former Chief of Staff of the National Army, General Igor Gorgan, of state awards and military ranks. The head of the Presidential Chancellery, Adrian Balutsel, announced this today in response to information published by an international publication, according to which Gorgan passed information to the secret services of the Russian Federation.

“In connection with the investigation published in an international publication, we clarify: such crimes against the state – Treason against the Motherland, should be punished most severely. In 2021, this person was removed from office by President Maia Sandu. The state will revoke the awards given to him in 2006 ‘For Military Merit,’ in 2015 ‘For Faith in the Motherland,’ and military ranks,” Balutsel announced.

According to Balutsel, such cases show that constant monitoring and thorough vetting of persons working in defense and state security agencies is essential.

“Such criminals contribute to the hybrid threats creation to the Moldovan state. It is why we need more efficient tools to fight against acts of Treason against the Motherland,” the official explained.

The former chief of the Moldovan General Staff, Igor Gorgan, regularly reported on the internal political situation in Moldova and passed data on visits by representatives of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry to his supervisor – Colonel Alexei Makarov, who is working in the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). The Insider discovered this in its investigation by accessing the correspondence on Telegram.
