Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova, sent a message of support to the Georgian people on Sunday, December 29, in the context of the recent political crisis in Georgia. In a post on X, she said: “Today, as always, we stand with the people of Georgia in their struggle for freedom, democracy and a European future. Your courage and determination inspire us all, and Moldova stands by your side on this common path.”
The statement comes amid a tense situation in Georgia, where former footballer Mikhail Kavelaashvili was elected president in an election disputed by the opposition and marred by allegations of fraud. Former president Salome Zurabishvili refused to recognize the result and called the vote “illegitimate.” Thousands of Georgians took to the streets, forming a human chain in protest at what they see as a threat to democracy.
In her speech, Maia Sandu underlined the close ties between Moldova and Georgia, two countries with common aspirations to join the European Union. She stressed that Moldova’s support remains firm despite geopolitical challenges in the region.
