Today marks four years since the Republic of Moldova submitted its application to join the European Union. On this occasion, the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova published a public message stating that the country is taking determined steps on its path toward European integration. The EU consolidated this path in June 2022, when the European Council granted Moldova candidate country status.

EU representatives emphasized that this status opened the way for broader support from the European Union, including funding, assistance in implementing reforms, and deeper integration into the European single market.

“This cooperation helps Moldova modernize its institutions, move closer to European standards, and advance on the path to accession,” the EU Delegation in Chisinau said in its message. European officials reiterated that the European Union remains firmly by Moldova’s side throughout its transformation process and alignment with European standards.

Four years ago today, President Maia Sandu, together with Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and then Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, signed Moldova’s application for EU membership. On June 17, 2022, the European Commission issued its opinion on the application, and on June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Moldova candidate status.

Since then, the country has continued to make steady progress toward accession. The European Commission’s Enlargement Report of November 2025 confirmed Moldova’s significant progress and placed it among the leaders of the EU accession process alongside Montenegro and Ukraine. Moldova advanced rapidly through legislative alignment, completed official screening procedures, and updated its National Accession Program for 2025-2029.
