Members of the the SCP and the SCJ meet with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Judicial reform on the agenda

Members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP) and the Superior Council of the Judiciary (SCJ) met on Thursday, February 13, with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset. The officials discussed significant Council of Europe projects aimed at judicial reform, highlighting the importance of initiatives that focus on improving the judicial system and strengthening the independence of prosecutors and judges, as stated in an SCP press release.

“During the dialogue, the President of the SCP, Dumitru Obada, and the President of the SCJ, Sergiu Caraman, addressed key issues regarding cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe in the field of justice, with particular emphasis on the Council’s Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova 2025-2028. This program serves as a strategic tool to support democratic reforms, strengthen the rule of law, and protect the fundamental rights of citizens.

In the context of the discussions, the participants analyzed the current challenges and main achievements in implementing judicial reform, reiterating Moldova’s firm commitment to continue efforts to modernize and enhance the transparency of the judicial system, in line with European standards,” stated the SCP in the press release.

Reports suggested President Maia Sandu attended the meeting, but the Presidency’s spokesperson denied this information. “President Maia Sandu did not participate in such discussions,” said Igor Zaharov to realitatea.md.

According to the SCP, Moldova is marking 30 years since joining the Council of Europe, preparing to take over the organization’s Presidency in November 2025 for a six-month term.
