MEP Marta Kos Bets Moldova Will Join the EU Sooner Than Expected

During a press event marking the signing of Moldova’s €1.9 billion Growth Plan agreement, MEP Marta Kos proposed a friendly wager to Prime Minister Dorin Recean about the country’s timeline for EU accession.

While Recean predicted Moldova would become a full EU member in four years, Kos placed her bet on an even earlier date—three years and ten months.

The exchange was in the presence of President Maia Sandu and Speaker Igor Grosu, following the formalization of the aid agreement known as Moldova’s Growth Plan.

“Through external solidarity and internal unity, which we as a society must strengthen, we will be ready to join the EU not in ten years, not in twenty, but in just four years. Moldova can do it,” declared Prime Minister Recean.

After his remarks, Kos took the floor and offered a lighthearted challenge: “You know I am very competitive. If you say four years, I say three years and ten months. Let’s make a bet and see who wins.” Recean smiled and accepted.

The moment, symbolic and optimistic, reflects growing confidence in Moldova’s EU trajectory.
